Premier Akeeagok and Minister Joanasie meet with the Nunavut Climate Change Youth Advisory Committee.

On February 2nd, Nunavut’s Premier, P.J. Akeeagok, and Nunavut’s Minister of Environment, Mr. David Joanasie, met with members of our Nunavut Climate Change Youth Advisory Committee (NuCCYAC), during the committee’s annual planning meeting.  During the session NuCCYAC members had the opportunity to engage in a meaningful discussion with the Premier and Minister Joanasie. Both leaders expressed their admiration for the committee, emphasizing how inspiring it was to see young, passionate Nunavummiut acting on one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Celebrating Earth Hour with Youth!

Earth Hour is a global event that raises awareness about sustainability and climate change by encouraging people to turn off their lights for one hour. As part of this initiative, the Climate Change Secretariat, in partnership with the Department of Environment and the City of Iqaluit, organized a series of activities to highlight the importance of Earth Hour, energy conservation, and climate action.

In 2018 the Office of the Auditor General of Canada’s Audit of Climate Change Activities in Nunavut recommended that CCS, in collaboration with other GN departments and agencies, analyse and rank the risks of climate change impacts affecting those things that are important to Nunavummiut.  This recommendation prompted the development of the Climate Change Risk and Resiliency Assessment (CCRRA) process.  As part of the CCRRA, a Nunavut specific methodology was developed to identify, analyse, and rank climate risks and to develop a compendium of climate change resiliency measures.&n

Supporting Sustainable Energy and Energy Self-Reliance in Nunavut!

The GN supports the development of clean energy initiatives across Nunavut.  For this reason, the CCS is currently working to better support sustainable energy projects in the territory.  As part of this initiative, the Secretariat is developing the ‘Sustainable Energy Support Policy’.  This policy will modernize and replace the current Renewable Energy Support Policy, providing a comprehensive framework that reflects the Government of Nunavut’s priorities for energy security, economic resilience, and climate action.  Check back in the coming months for updates on our su

2025 in the International Year of the Glacier

To highlight the critical role that glaciers play in our climate system, and to recognize their role in providing fresh water to nearly two billion people around the world, the United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation.  Going forward, and starting this year, the UN has proclaimed that March 21st will now be known as World Day for Glaciers.  This proclamation also aims to raise awareness about the economic, social, and environmental impacts that melting glaciers will have around the globe.  Did you know?  Nunavut is home
