Nunavut’s New Sustainable Energy Support Policy

On Wednesday May 28th, the Honourable David Joanasie, Minister of Environment, announced the launch of Nunavut’s new Sustainable Energy Support Policy (SESP) in the Legislative Assembly, marking a major step forward in the territory’s journey toward energy sovereignty and climate resilience.

The SESP replaces the 2021 Renewable Energy Support Policy, reflecting years of learning and progress in supporting cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions for Nunavummiut. Building on existing programs for homeowners and cabin owners, the new policy introduces the Independent Power Producer (IPP) Subsidy, supporting larger-scale community-led renewable energy projects under the Qulliq Energy Corporation’s IPP program.

"This policy brings us closer to more ambitious and resilient energy solutions developed right here in Nunavut," said Minister Joanasie. "We are strengthening our commitment to sustainable development while empowering Inuit and municipal-led initiatives."

In addition to continued support for household energy upgrades, the Nunavut Housing Corporation will offer enhanced programming aimed at improving energy efficiency in homes across the territory.

The policy also extends to all public bodies, offering direct support and guidance through the Climate Change Secretariat, which will act as the central hub for implementation. This whole-of-government approach will support reduced diesel reliance, align Nunavut’s efforts with national goals, and contribute meaningfully to international climate commitments.

Minister Joanasie expressed gratitude to the many partners involved in shaping the new policy, including Qulliq Energy Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, regional development corporations, and Nunavut Housing Corporation.
