Iqaluit Campers Send Messages to Climate Leaders

On July 27, 2026, campers from the City of Iqaluit’s summer day camp program took part in a “Postcards from the Future” activity organized by Maren Hayward, a summer student with the Nunavut Climate Change Secretariat (CCS). The activity is part of a project collecting stories from youth across Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Campers began by discussing changes they have noticed in the environment. They then painted, drew and wrote about how northern communities can prepare for the effects of climate change, their hopes for the future and the messages they wanted to send to climate leaders.

From Sept. 22 to 24, 2026, the campers’ postcards will be displayed at Adaptation Canada 2026 in Toronto. The national conference will bring together more than 1,000 participants representing communities and sectors across Canada to share ideas and practical solutions for responding to climate change.
