CCS Introduces NEST–RFDS Program to Support Community Energy Solutions

With the receipt of federal funding, the Climate Change Secretariat (CCS) introduces the Nunavut Energy & Shelter Technology – Research Facility Demonstration Sites (NEST–RFDS) initiative, a new program designed to support and coordinate community-led energy innovation across Nunavut.

Building on earlier work through the Nunavut Climate Change Centre (NC3) and the Community Energy Planning program, NEST–RFDS moves from planning into action by supporting real-world pilot projects in communities.

NEST-RFDS acts as an umbrella, under this umbrella CCS will coordinate a network of pilot projects that test energy solutions in Arctic conditions. These projects may range from energy efficiency upgrades in homes to larger community infrastructure, energy storage systems, and renewable power generation.

By connecting projects through a single program, NEST–RFDS enables the retention and distribution of results, data, and lessons learned across Nunavut. This approach aims to accelerate the adoption of solutions that improve energy affordability, reliability, and resilience.

CCS will serve as the program steward, supporting communities, partners, and organizations by helping develop project ideas, connect funding opportunities, and reduce administrative requirements.

The initiative is designed to support collaboration between communities, Inuit organizations, researchers, industry, and governments, ensuring that projects align with local priorities and contribute to long-term capacity building.
