A new solar panel system has been successfully installed at Attagoyuk Ilisavik high school in Pangnirtung, Nunavut. The project is part of the South Baffin Nunavut Energy Management Program, which has been working since 2019 to improve energy efficiency and promote sustainable energy in the region.

The installation includes 180 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels mounted on the school’s roof. Green Sun Rising Inc., a company with experience in solar energy projects, led the installation and activation of the system in April 2025. The panels have a total average output of 48 kW, helping to reduce the school’s dependence on diesel-generated electricity. This new solar setup is expected to generate savings of approximately $12,951 on the school’s power bill each year.

The initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also fosters local employment and skill development. Two Pangnirtung residents and former students of the high school, Joshua Angnakak and Nolan Kuluguqtuk, participated in the installation process, gaining hands-on experience in sustainable energy technologies.

The project reflects a growing commitment in Nunavut to explore cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, while also providing community members with a firsthand example of sustainable energy in action.
