The Government of Nunavut has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to support sustainable energy projects in Nunavut with the approval of their new Sustainable Energy Support Policy (SESP). This policy modernizes and replaces the former Renewable Energy Support Policy (RESP), providing a comprehensive framework that supports the Government of Nunavut's goal of reducing the territory’s reliance on fossil fuel while also enhancing Nunavut’s energy security, economic development, and climate resiliency.
The SESP includes a Grants and Contributions Policy to properly support the various programs under the SESP and introduces an Independent Power Producer (IPP) Subsidy that supports large-scale Inuit-led sustainable energy projects in collaboration with QEC. Additionally, the SESP provides a GN wide framework for incorporating a climate change lens into all GN projects and activities.
By prioritizing transparency, accountability, and community-centric solutions, the policy respects Inuit societal values and aims to create a resilient and self-reliant energy future for Nunavummiut.
The SESP also represents a forward-thinking approach to energy policy, positioning Nunavut to be a leader in community driven sustainable energy projects.
