The Nunavut Climate Change Secretariat renames the Climate Champions Toolkit to honor the memory of Joshua Ipeelie Komangapik.
On June 11, 2026, the Honourable Brian Koonoo, Minister of Environment, announced the renaming of the Nunavut Climate Champions Toolkit to the Joshua Ipeelie Komangapik Climate Champions Toolkit in honour of Nunavut Climate Change Youth Advisory Committee (NuCCYAC) member Joshua Ipeelie Komangapik.
Mr. Speaker, The Government of Nunavut is honoured to recognize the life and contributions of Joshua Komangapik through the renaming of the Nunavut Climate Change Champion Toolkit as the Joshua Ipeelie Komangapik Climate Change Champion Toolkit.
The toolkit is a youth-driven resource designed to empower Nunavummiut to take climate action. Whether you are a youth, Elder, student, educator, community leader, or simply passionate about protecting the land, the toolkit provides practical tools and inspiration to help individuals become climate champions within their communities.
Joshua was a valued member of the Nunavut Climate Change Youth Advisory Committee and a thoughtful voice within ongoing conversations surrounding climate change, resiliency, and the importance of Inuit knowledge and perspectives in shaping Nunavut’s future. His contributions reflected a strong sense of care for community, culture, and the environment, and his presence left a meaningful impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
This renaming was brought forward through the Youth Advisory Committee to honour Joshua’s memory and recognize the lasting impact he had on his peers. With the support and permission of his family, the Government of Nunavut is proud to carry his name forward through a resource intended to inspire youth leadership, awareness, and action on climate change across Nunavut.
The Joshua Ipeelie Komangapik Climate Change Champion Toolkit will continue to encourage young Nunavummiut to engage in climate action in ways that reflect Inuit values, community strengths, and stewardship of the land.
On behalf of the Government of Nunavut, I extend my sincere gratitude to Joshua’s family for allowing us to recognize his legacy in this way. His contributions will not be forgotten.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
Joshua was a valued voice on the NuCCYAC, bringing a deep sense of care for community, culture, and the environment to every meeting. Beyond the committee, Joshua made meaningful contributions to conversations about climate change and the importance of Inuit knowledge and perspectives in shaping Nunavut’s future.
Nunavut Climate Champions Toolkit is meant to inspire Nunavummiut across the territory to become climate champions in their own communities. Because of this, members of the NuCCYAC formally requested to rename the toolkit to inspire action while also honoring Joshua’s legacy and memory as a champion of climate action in Nunavut.
