Nunavut’s Energy Transition: Building Independence and Stability

Across Nunavut, communities are taking important steps toward greater energy sovereignty and cost stability. For decades, our communities, homes, schools, and businesses have relied almost entirely on imported diesel fuel, an energy source that has fluctuating costs that must be shipped thousands of kilometres every year. Now, that story is beginning to change.

From solar panels and wind turbines to hybrid systems and waste-heat recovery, Nunavummiut are exploring energy solutions that draw power from the land, the sun, and the wind. These local projects are helping communities reduce their dependence on imported fuel, stabilize energy costs, enhances local capacity, and strengthen local economies. Each project represents a step toward energy sovereignty, where Nunavummiut have greater control over how energy is produced, used, and managed across the territory.

This map showcases the growing number of sustainable energy projects that are already powering our progress. Together, they reflect a practical, community-driven approach to building a stronger, more self-reliant Nunavut.
