Introducing Silanga.ca - Community Driven Weather Information

Silanniarviit, is an Inuit-led group of community weather station network managers in Nunavut. They have developed Silanga.ca to help share and promote the use of community-based weather information. The group currently supports weather station networks in Igloolik, Arctic Bay, Pond Inlet, and—soon—Sanirajak, alongside additional stations in Grise Fiord and research sites across the region. These stations are chosen by community members, maintained by locally trained technicians, and designed to complement Inuit knowledge as well as other weather sources such as Environment Canada, windy.com, and SIKU.

Community-driven weather stations like those on Silanga.ca are especially important for Nunavummiut because they provide locally important, real-time information that supports safe travel, community preparedness, and emergency response in our changing climate. By combining Inuit knowledge with reliable on-the-ground data, these stations help strengthen resilience and decision-making across Nunavut.

Inspired by community weather station efforts in Clyde River and Labrador, Silanniarviit ensures that data belongs to the communities who host and care for the stations, while being supported by research expertise from Carleton University’s Water and Ice Research Lab (WIRL).
