Winds of Change: Nunavut Students Power Up Climate Solutions

The Climate Change Secretariat recently ran hands-on workshops at École des Trois-Soleils and Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik Middle School, engaging students aged 9 to 13 in sustainable energy education.

Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of climate change, energy consumption, sustainable energy sources, and wind turbine mechanics. They then had the opportunity to design and customize their own turbines, experimenting with different components and configurations. Once completed, students measured the electrical output of their wind turbines using a fan and a voltmeter. The workshop ended with students discussing the results to understand how design choices impact performance.

The hands-on nature of the activity sparked strong engagement, with students enthusiastically testing different design combinations.

This activity helped students connect energy use to climate change and helped them understand how our energy choices affect our climate and environment and Nunavut’s energy independence.
